What you’ll learn

Reactive behaviour is rarely about the trigger alone. More often, it reflects a dog’s difficulty regulating emotion, coping with pressure, or navigating an environment that feels unpredictable or overwhelming.

This seminar breaks reactivity down into understandable components and shows you how to work with them in a practical, compassionate way.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Understand what reactivity is – and what it isn’t
  • Recognise triggers, thresholds, and early signs of escalation
  • Identify contributing factors including development, health, learning history, and experience
  • Prevent rehearsal through thoughtful management and environmental change
  • Use distance, predictability, and reinforcement to keep dogs under threshold
  • Apply BAT (Behaviour Adjustment Training) and LAT (Look At That) to change emotional responses
  • Use pattern games to build focus, predictability, and emotional safety
  • Develop confidence through structured play, problem-solving, and scent-based activities
  • Support dogs who struggle with handling, restraint, or veterinary procedures using cooperative care
  • Stack skills and generalise learning so dogs can cope in more complex environments
  • Build calm emotional states using trained safe places and portable regulation cues

Throughout the seminar, equal importance is given to supporting the handler. Reactivity affects both ends of the lead, and progress depends on clarity, consistency, and realistic expectations.

By the end of the seminar, you’ll have a deeper understanding of reactivity, a broad practical toolkit, and a clear framework for helping dogs feel safer, more confident, and better able to cope with everyday life.
